In an age when society believed that a woman would most likely die before completing a marathon and that women should not be allowed to participate in contact sports because they might hurt their breasts, the sports bra was born. For years women had faced discomfort when exercising due to bouncing breasts, chafing materials, and twisting bra straps, inhibiting them from taking part in sports and other physical activities that they loved. That is until Lisa Lidahl, mother of the sports bra, decided to take the situation into her own hands and create a solution to the problems that so many women were facing.
As the sports bra began to develop into a popular commodity and the industry grew, real women athletes continued to tackle the issues they struggled with, innovating new design aspects. These designs have developed into the sports bras that we see today, which are more advanced pieces of technology than simply staple articles of athletic clothing. In fact, they have proved to be far more than that. The invention of the sports bra has had a large effect on the roles of women in society, revolutionizing their place in society by supporting gender equality through sports, yet also contributing to such societal flaws as the sexualization of women and encouraging body image issues.
